Amalgam is an outdated material that is unacceptable for use in the human body. While it exposes a person to mercury, it also weakens teeth and leaves teeth subject to catastrophic failure. Amalgam doesn't reinforce the tooth because it can't bond to teeth. It expands over time and facilitates fracturing of cusps of teeth. It leaks and allows bacterial seepage deep within the tooth.
All of these problems lead to a much higher risk of root canal problems developing. By using state of the art bonded ceramic inlays and onlays all of the problems with amalgam can be overcome. An example of a ceramic onlay replacing a failing amalgam is shown above.
